天寶十年李巨卿榜及第。少聰敏，承鄉曲之譽。初従計吏至京口客舍，月夜閑步，聞戶外有行吟聲，哦曰：『曲終人不見，江上數峰青。』凡再三往來，起遽従之，無所見矣。嘗怪之。及就試粉闈，詩題乃《湘靈鼓瑟》，起輟就，即以鬼謠十字為落句，主文李暐深嘉美，擊節吟味久之，曰：『是必有神助之耳。』遂擢置高第。釋褐授校書郎。嘗采箭竹，奉使入蜀。除考功郎中。
大曆中為太清宮使、翰林學士。起詩體制新奇，理致清贍，芟宋、齊之浮遊，削梁、陳之嫚靡，迥然獨立也。
王右丞許以高格，與郎士元齊名，士林語曰：『前有沈、宋，後有錢、郎。』集十卷，今傳。子徽
能詩，外甥懷素善書，一門之中，藝名森出，可尚矣。
