鍾惺，字伯敬，
竟陵人。
萬曆三十八年進士。授行人，稍遷工部主事，尋改南京禮部，進郎中。擢福建提學僉事，以父憂歸，卒於家。惺貌寢，羸不勝衣，為人嚴冷，不喜接俗客，由此得謝人事。官南都，僦秦淮水閣讀史，恒至丙夜，有所見即筆之，名曰《史懷》。晚逃於禪以卒。
自宏道矯王、李詩之弊，倡以清真，惺復矯其弊，變而為幽深孤峭。與同里譚元春評選唐人之詩為《唐詩歸》，又評選隋以前詩為《古詩歸》。鍾、譚之名滿天下，謂之竟陵體
。然兩人學不甚富，其識解多僻，大為通人所譏。
