閩語，
華南地方之言也，亦名福建話云云。操之者多居閩省，是故以省名名之。
海南、
廣東、
臺灣諸地亦有用之者。
初，中國學者分漢語諸言為七：曰官話，曰吳語，曰閩語，曰粵語，曰客語，曰湘語，曰贛語，曰晉語
。然以語言學分，言不通即非一語。閩省諸地之言實不能互通，乃復分閩語為六：曰閩北語，曰閩東語，曰閩南語，曰閩中語，曰莆仙語，曰閩贛語
