至作者，一說微獨一人，一說唯獨一人。昔執誼跋《別記》曰：「書中章回，修短不一。自二百四十一回後，若別出一手，殆編以講演，陸續成帙者。」後人因其說，謂說書人以史實傳言聚成，謂其一部事形見知付梓前
。然或者以爲獨力而成，撰者蓋博學之宿儒

後有《臨水平妖記》，據《別記》前數回而作
