元瑜，陳留尉氏人也。少受學於蔡邕，邕以為奇才也，妙於音律，善解音，能鼓琴，唱作俱佳。其詩亦有文名，有詩《駕出北郭門行》一首。建安中，都護曹洪欲使掌書記，瑀終不為屈。而後，漢丞相曹操聞其名，亦欲辟之，仍不應，而逃入山中
。曹操使人焚山，阮瑀才出來，入朝為掾，同陳琳等任司空軍謀祭酒，管記室，共擬軍國書檄文字。建安十五年，子阮籍生。

軼事

時曹操西征長安，大宴賓客，怒瑀不與語，使就技人列。瑀善解音，能鼓琴，遂撫弦而歌，因造歌曲曰：「奕奕天門開，大魏應期運。青蓋巡九州，在東西人怨。士為知己死，女為悅者玩。恩義苟敷暢，他人焉能亂？」為曲旣捷，音聲殊妙，當時冠坐，曹操大悅。
