陶淡，字處靜，太尉侃
之孫，

之堂叔也。父夏，以無行被廢。淡幼孤，好導養之術，謂仙道可祈。年十五六，便服食絕穀，不婚娶。家累千金，僮客百數，淡終日端拱，曾不營問。頗好讀《易》善卜筮。于長沙臨湘山中結廬居之，養一白鹿以自偶。親故有候之者，輒移渡澗水，莫得近之。州舉秀才，淡聞，遂轉逃羅縣埤山中，終身不返，莫知所終。
有祠立於長沙陶公庙，千年以來，香火旺盛。
