雷震，字儆寰，浙江長興人。少時入湖州府中學堂，後東渡日本，入京都帝國大學，習法政。歸國後投身國民革命，歷任國民政府要職，曾任政治協商會議秘書長、國民參政會副秘書長等。其人通達時務，直言敢諫，以匡正時弊為志。

民國三十八年，隨國民政府遷臺。翌年，與胡適、
殷海光等創《
自由中國
》雜誌，倡民主自由，針砭時政，力主憲政改革。其社論鋒利，屢觸當道忌諱，遂招忌恨。民國四十九年，以「涉嫌叛亂」罪名繫獄十年，世稱「雷震案」，海內外震動。獄中著《回憶錄》，述平生志業，矢志不渝。

晚年獲釋，蟄居臺北，潛心著述。民國六十八年病歿，享年八十三。其人以書生報國，雖遭困厄而氣節凜然，後世譽為「臺灣民主先驅」。所創《自由中國》啟蒙一代學人，為戒嚴時期重要精神火炬，影響深遠。
