電石燈者，
台灣人謂之為電土燈、
瓦斯燈
。其燃料，
乙炔也，蓋電石
（碳化鈣）與水
反應而得。此物為何人所創，已不可考。
電石燈甚優於煤油燈
。其一，其甚明也。其二，其不易為風所滅。電石燈多為鉛
皮及銅
皮所製。分上下二層，上層置水，下層置電石。中有活門，可控水之流量。噴口之處，亦有活門，以控火焰之大小。復有鋁
製之燈罩於燈頭，以聚光增亮。電燈昔時未有普遍之時，民咸用電石燈，尤礦工為甚。蓋電石燈可以探知氧氣之多少也。若氧氣少，則燈滅。後，
電燈普及，電石燈遂無人問津。
