項燕為楚將，數有功，愛士卒，楚人憐之。
《楚世家》云，
楚王負芻四年（前二二四年），
秦
將王翦破楚軍於蘄，而殺將軍項燕。五年（前二二三年），王翦、蒙武滅楚，虜楚王負芻。
《秦始皇本紀》云，
秦王政二十三年（前二二四年），王翦虜楚王負芻。項燕立昌平君為楚王，反秦於淮南。二十四年（前二二三年），王翦、蒙武攻楚，破楚軍，昌平君死，項燕遂自殺。
