類書云者，採摭群書，攬盡萬門，隨類相從，編輯臚列，以利尋檢、征引。類今日之工具書
。判以所載之別、編法之異，則有三類：義系、形系、音系。
以義類分部編錄者，義系也。如天文、
地理、人事類。系下則小類若干。如天文類有日、
月、
星、時，時又有春、
夏、
秋、
冬
云。古者類書大抵義系之屬。判以所錄，則有專門、織綜之別。
音系。從古書擷短語，短則二字，修則四字，以末字之韻歸於某韻部。字林、辭海之編纂，遂能得所據矣。
