上海市人也，
一九五六年生於北京
。父工，并有詩名。妻謝氏。城年十二，
文革起，國家喪亂，遂父流昌邑，令輟學飼豚，而自作詩不綴。一九七三年，始治畫藝，尋歸京業梓人以營生計。一九七七年，復拾筆開墨，領一時風騷，號朦朧詩派
。
一九八零年，失業，乃發遊歷山河之憤，一覽江湖。
一九八五年，入中國作協，翌年，承泰西文人之邀，造歐羅巴、美利堅諸邦以弘其學。一九八八年，赴澳洲新西蘭國講學，授奧克蘭大學研究員，旋謝職而隱激流島，經年不出，
一九九二年，復出桃源以弘其學，赴德意志國，著述稱豐，有詩、文、畫、書諸種。一九九三年，卒於奧克蘭激流島，年三十七，妻謝氏并卒。時人扼腕焉。初，城遇北大生李英，乃倾心別枝而存分外之情，故謝氏有休婚斷緣之意，遂起不諧，或有謂城手刃其妻而共死者，蓋訛傳也。子木耳，不顯。有集《顧城詩全編》行於世，中以名篇《一代人》，言簡意賅，體裁出新故，獨具令譽。
