顧準，字哲雲，江蘇蘇州人。少負奇志，十齡入立信會計所習業，弱冠投身左翼運動。抗日時輾轉蘇南，主政財經，建樹卓然。共和國立，擢華東軍政委員會要職，然因直言屢忤上意遭黜。
蟄居研讀廿載，通覽馬列、
希臘哲史，首倡社會主義市場經濟之思，謂「價值規律當存於社會主義」。浩劫中迭遭批鬥，妻離子散，猶秉燭著《顧準文存》，探民主憲政之源，斥教條主義之弊。嘗言：「神聖終極目的，實為專制溫床。」西元一九七四年冬，病殁京郊，年五十有九。遺稿塵封，至八年代方顯於世，其論超前廿載，譽為「中國現代思想彗星」。邃思獨行，寧鳴而死，後世尊為「改革先驅」。
