高麗仁宗第五子，
明宗之母弟也。

仁宗二十二年七月庚申生。及長，封爲平涼公，明宗二十七年九月癸亥，
崔忠獻廢明宗，迎王，卽位於大觀殿。元年，崔忠獻從術士議，置山川禆補都監。二年，崔忠獻以兵部尚書知吏部事，總文武銓註，出入禁闥，以兵自衛。忠獻恐其生變不測，大小文武官吏、閑良之士至於軍卒，強有力者，並皆招致，分為六番，更日值宿其家，號曰都房。四年，刑部尚書閔湜卒。五年，門下侍中趙永仁卒。明宗薨於昌樂宮。七年，王患疽，傳位太子，移御德陽侯邸，薨，太子立為熙宗
。忠獻議減䘮十四日。在位七年，壽六十一。諡曰靖孝，廟號神宗，葬於城南，陵曰陽陵。
