明南直隸興化人，
萬曆三十二年進士。授汝南府推官，巨豪某為民害，立除之。擢兵科給事中，抗疏請立東宮，又屢疏陳時務及輔臣失職狀。遷刑科，疏放宮女。天啟初，議泰昌年號以繼序承統，力爭存元，條奏三案事，侃侃言無顧畏。尋掌吏科主內計。進太常卿，代祠孟廟。歷大理太僕卿至兵部左侍郎，乞休歸。莊烈帝立序邊疆功，有恩賜，然竟不復起。裡居三十年，精研理學。歲飢，詣兩台為鄉人請命，質冠帔剔帶金市粟以賑，為士民倡。性孝友，既貴，雖親戚至貧賤者歲時必過之，遇諸途未嘗不下車。預自刻期沐浴，具衣冠端坐而卒，卒之日猶詩賦飲酒談笑如常時。
