昭成帝嫡孫也。
代滅時尚幼，母賀氏，攜帝依劉庫仁。及庫仁子顯立，欲殺珪。珪因奔賀蘭部，既而諸部大人推為代王。後改國號為魏。三九六年，即帝位，都平城。討破劉顯、
劉衛辰，伐後燕，圍中山，破慕容寶
。在位二十三年，為子清河王紹所弒。謚號道武，廟號太祖。年號登國、皇始、天興、天賜。
