昔日人以彼爲夜行之鳥，故稱「鵺」。

》云，單張之山有鳥，似雉，曰白鵺

然此非日人所稱之鵺也。
仁平三年，天皇有疾，久不能癒。蓋有妖物，夜至其宮。乃令武士除之。武士見天有黑雲，乃發矢

既落此物，乃知其首似猿，身似狸，尾似蛇，四肢如虎，「其聲似鵺。」是故日人謂此獸曰鵺。
或曰彼獸非鵺，鵺實爲鳥名。
