鳥也。於生學也，自為鸊鷉目。目中惟一科，曰鷿鷈科，科下六屬二十種。按鳥類脫氧核糖核酸分類系統，鷿鷈目與鸛形目併，鷿鷈科屬新鸛形目。然未涉及鷿鷈科。
其形，羽鬆輭若絲。頭有時具羽冠或皺領。口細直而銳。翅短圓。尾有絨羽，短小。
