紹興餘姚人也。父尊素仕明為御史。為魏忠賢所害。崇禎初，詣闕訟父冤。毆害其父者，拔其須，復追殺當事獄卒，以祭慰父靈。思宗烈皇帝聞之，深感其誠。弘光初，
阮大鉞復欲除東林之黨，宗羲幾遭不測。俄而南京陷虜，宗羲得免。從魯王朱以海，授御史。王敗走海上，宗羲從亡。講學不輟。及浙江陷，宗羲乃歸鄉，窮力著述。清皇帝屢征之，不赴。康熙三十四年，卒。年八十。
