。天平二年，授散騎常侍、驃騎大將軍、儀同三司、左光祿大夫、太原郡開國公。武定元年，加侍中。二年，轉尚書左僕射、領軍將軍。五年，授尚書令、中書監、京畿大都督。武定七年八月，兄澄遇害，夏五月辛亥，帝如鄴。甲寅，進相國，總百揆，封冀州之渤海長樂安德武邑、瀛州之河間高陽章武、定州之中山常山博陵十郡，邑二十萬戶，加九錫，殊禮，齊王如故。又致璽書於帝，遣兼太保彭城王韶、兼司空敬顯儁奉皇帝璽綬，禪代之禮一依唐虞、漢魏故事。
天保十年十月，帝暴崩於晉陽宮德陽堂，時年三十四，諡曰文宣皇帝，廟號威宗。武平初，又改為文宣，廟號顯祖。
