物理學事也，其變在能量。古人見之，謂有熱質焉，不生不滅，如液流移。及近代，格致家焦耳氏作，發明功、熱相待之理，奠基功權守恆之說，熱質論於是乎黜矣。蓋此熱也，物動使之然也，物含微塵無量數，其動也靡則，碰擊不定，是生熱。逼拶而動，兩溫同增，而全能不減也。
